The SDGA Hall of Fame Class of 2025

I had the pleasure of attending the Syracuse District Golf Association Hall of Fame induction ceremonies last week that were held at the Tuscarora Country Club for the deserving and meritorious class of 2025. It was simply first class. You only need to know that the criteria for induction is based on the following...” In recognition of those who have accomplished an

exceptional Greater Syracuse area amateur record while conducting themselves

in the true spirit of the game of golf as embodied in its ancient and honorable traditions”. Simple but powerful words for all competitive amateur golfers in CNY who aspire to some day be recognized for their record, character and contributions to the game of golf.

The recipients are a compilation of a “WHO’S WHO” in CNY golf lore. The evening began with opening remarks by SDGA President, Bob Kowa who thanked all of the Officers and Members at Large for sharing their knowledge and experience in the game that continues to contribute to the outstanding reputation and traditions of the SDGA since its inception. Bob

“flipped” the ball to Terry Langan, Chair of the Hall of Fame Committee who clearly

“hit-it-out-of-the-park” when presenting the inductees with their plaques along with Bill Motto and Chuck Harty, the other two members on the committee. The Class of

2025 includes:

SUZY WHALEY

A trail blazer, the first women President of the PGA of America and the first women since Babe Zaharias to play in a men’s PGA Tour Event and who got her start here in CNY. Her accomplishments on and off the course have opened doors and changed perceptions, paving the way for countless others.

JOHN CLARE

A Tremendously talented golfer with even greater humility, achieving the coveted SDGA Triple Crown at the age of 18, excelling in college golf and then turning pro to compete on the Latin-American Tour and PGA Tour Canada.

SALLY DEE

A fierce competitor, devoted mentor, who rose from the local and state Junior and Women’s Amateur levels becoming a 3-time College All American, and then competing 5 years on the LPGA Tour, playing in all of the Women’s Majors.

KEVIN VANDENBERG

A winner of 5 SDGA Men’s Majors and 3 SDGA Senior Majors and NYS Senior Championship. He has continued his impressive play at the regional and national levels, winning many Senior titles across the country and recently repeating as the Golfweek’s National Senior Amateur Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024.

JOE RUSSO JR.

Whose game has stood the test of time, winning numerous local Junior, college, and men’s and senior amateur championships over a span of many years. His two 2 SDGA major victories were 24 years apart. Joe’s name is analogous with “Legend” in CNY.

FRANK PLATA

A steady player who dominated the local Senior Circuit for many years. His 11 local Senior Major titles as well as the NYS Senior Championship are outstanding. His name is synonymous with integrity, sportsmanship and lifelong dedication to the game. By the way, I am proud to say I have interviewed all six of the inductees on my radio show during their journey to the SDGA Hall of Fame.
