Happy 25th Anniversary to... CH insurance & "Tee Time"

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO...I walked into

the office of David Zinkhan, the owner of a Radio

Station (WZZZ) in Fulton NY. I told him I was

inquiring about doing a morning talk show on

his station. He asked me how much experience I

had. When I told him I didn’t have any, he started

laughing and asked me what made me think I

could do it. I informed him I had been listening

to talk radio for several years and the ones I liked

best were, Don Imus (Radio Hall of Fame), Rush

Limbaugh, Dr. Laura Schlessinger (psychologist)

and Tony Cornheiser (sports). I also told him I

believed I could do it by incorporating a few ideas

from each of their shows into a 2 hour morning

show. He seemed interested and said, “Give me

a proposal and I’ll get back to you”. I must admit

I was annoyed when I didn’t hear from him so I

decided to drive to the station. He was there and

when I saw him I said, “Let me try it for one week

at no charge and if you are not satisfied with my

performance, you can fire me. He started to laugh

but this time it was a good, friendly laugh. He said

"ok"! I asked him when I was going to start? He said

Monday morning.

When Monday arrived I was a nervous wreck.

To his credit, David was with me every morning. On

Friday, after David finished the news, something possessed me to say,

“David, come back in to wrap-up the show with

me”. He said, “Now, on the radio?” I said, “Yes”!

When David asked, “why”, I said, we were going to

evaluate the show on air instead of going to your

office”. He started laughing. The first words out of

my mouth were, “What do you think of the show”?

He said, “Oh no, it’s not what I think of the show,

it’s what do you think of the show”? I responded by

saying my guests were all knowledgeable, articulate

and informative but there is a problem...the host,

you should fire him”. This time he didn’t laugh.

It was more of a “roar”. I followed with, “I have

been listening to the tapes. He can’t speak proper

English. Every other word out of his mouth is...

ah, ah, ah...and he can’t put two sentences together

without sounding like a 2nd grader. Get rid of

him before he ruins your station”. His “roar” was

overwhelming this time but he managed to ask,

“Wait a minute, do you have any guests scheduled

for next week? I said “yes”. He said let’s give it

another week and see how it goes. We did the same

“Dog & Pony” routine for eight more weeks and

people started listening to the show because they

heard about the screwball Radio Host who wanted

to be fired and the owner of the station wanted him

to stay for another week. It is a wonderful memory

of something I never thought would happen.

Angela Moonan introduced me to Joe Jr. about

18 months ago. Since that time, Ch Insurance has

been the “Title Sponsor” of my radio show...”Tee

Time With The Pronoun” on WSYR, 570, I Heart

Radio, Saturday mornings from 7-8AM. Joe Jr.

Co-hosts the show with me almost every week and

has been a great “fit” for the show because of his

love for the game of golf. Joe Sr. has also been a

guest on the show several times. I recently found

out that Joe Sr. and I both followed our dreams 25

years ago and today...CH INSURANCE and TEE

TIME WITH THE PRONOUN share a wonderful

relationship with each other and the game of golf.

YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!
